Autism Science Digest

The Journal of AutismOne project was to create a new brand, the house style, art direction, layout, typesetting and final press ready artwork for perfect-bound 140-page colour litho printed and digital Issuu magazine. It was sold in Barnes in the US and by subscription.

Autism Science Digest is the first Autism Approved publication of the global autism community. Dedicated to respecting the intelligence of parents and the courage of forward-thinking scientists, Autism Science Digest continues the philosophy of founding organisation, AutismOne.

I first worked with Teri on Autism File USA which was nominated for an award for an international magazine. Teri is based in Los Angeles and I live in Cornwall. We have never actually met; yet we have collaborated on projects since 2009. Besides developing the house style for Autism Science Digest, I created designs and artwork for charts, maps, diagrams, business cards, web banners and advertisements, often liaising with the article's authors. The style needed to be minimal due to the intense nature of its content. Teri is, to date, one of the most meticulous editors of the English language that I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Once a year I collaborated with Teri to create print collateral for the seminars for AutismOne held in America with talks far and wide with specialists in the treatments for Autism. This always involved a seminar program, web banners and Exhibition print banners for Autism Science Digest.

Teri worked with SkyHorse Publishing in New York and I supplied designs and final reprographic artwork for several books written by scientific doctors which are available through online book stores.

I started working with Fiona when I became US/Canada editor of the Autism File magazine. Article authors would comment to me favorably about the appearance of the magazine layout under Fiona’s hand. An exacting editor, I would send her multitudes of edits that she would need to meticulously adjust in the typography, while also handling any shifts in overall article layout. Fiona and I spent long hours working very hard together across the ocean by email and telephone – two people together doing the work of entire graphics and editorial departments. Nicely accessible, Fiona would help achieve seemingly impossible deadlines. The magazine was even nominated for an International Design award. When I left the Autism File some years thereafter, I started another magazine called Autism Science Digest, and I employed Fiona who also served as designer in several book projects in which I was involved. She also designed the covers, including composing freehand artwork. Additionally, she designed many program guide covers and booklets, and marketing flyers for the large conference I run; this has included her producing stunning, beautiful work. How fortunate I have been to work with such a skilled, industrious, accessible, and personable artist as Fiona! I highly recommend her.
