Living Space

The project was a perfect-bound lay flat 128-page book titled Living Space. It was designed for ceramicist Jack and Sarah Doherty and printed and bound by St Austell Printing Company. The software used included Adobe CC Indesign, Illustrator, Acrobat & Photoshop.

Jack Doherty lives and works from his home and studio near Penzance, Cornwall. He makes porcelain vessel forms that are thrown on the potter’s wheel then carved and shaped when the clay is soft to reflect the fluidity of the material and physicality of making. This book is a celebration of his work – which is of an exceptionally high-quality. It needed to look and feel very special. After all, it was telling the story of one of the UK’s most respected names in porcelain. The book was written and curated by Sarah Doherty, designed by Fiona Routledge and features photography from Rebecca Peters and Ellen Doherty.

Exclusively printed on the brand new Ryobi instant-drying press at St Austell Printing Company Ltd, the inside 128 pages were printed on a 200gsm Arcoprint stock, with two special Transclear White translucent sheets* complete with designs individually-bound into the book.

*This only appears in the first edition which has since sold out of print.

Dimensions of the book: 230mm x 290mm portrait. The cover was printed on a 350gsm Arcoprint EW. This wood-free paper has a high-tech, cool white base guaranteeing excellent printability. Naturally elegant, Arcoprint 1 EW is held in very high regard in publishing and printing industries.

Individually perfect-bound, to “lay-flat” on opening, the book was hand-finished with a 140gsm dust jacket. Using the same press, the same experienced press-operator for the entire project, combined with a press pass with the designer ensured that colour reproduction was accurate and consistent across all stocks.

In 2022, Living Space was printed for a second run at St Austell Printing Company and is available to purchase on the Doherty Porcelain website, please click here.

It was such a pleasure to work with Fi on designing both our website and book. It was a special project and with her depth of experience she was able to translate all our ideas and our vision into reality with care, attention to detail and a truly professional approach. Thank you.
